Comcast NBCUniversal

Finance and Accounting Intern

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked getting projects of my own to lead. Since it was my second summer with Comcast, I was even able to lead 10 other interns through their journey with the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more attention from my boss (not a problem normally, mainly because the company was going through changes and I was directly under the VP).

Advice

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! You never know what it can lead to.

Environmental health and safety Intern

June - August 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to job shadow the rest of the Human Resources departments, such as Talent, Operations, and Employee Relations. I loved that I played a huge role in a project and I was able to present to the VP of the California region and his senior leadership team. Comcast also sent me to Denver on my last week of my internship to join the rest of the interns from the Western region. We worked on a case study and presented to the Western region VP of Comcast. Comcast did a fantastic job of letting me experience their company.

What I wish was different

I had such a great experience and I don't wish anything to be different.

Advice

Make connections with people in the company and show your interest.

What I liked

The company and everyone I worked with was genuinely welcoming and supportive.

What I wish was different

It honestly was perfect just the way it was.

Advice

Believe in yourself. I actually had more self-doubt in myself than my supervisors did. They were the ones that built up my level of confidence.

Editorial Production Intern

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved the freedom I had and the atmosphere of the building and the people in it. I felt that I was at a "real" job that I could see myself in the future

What I wish was different

I wish there were more people of color and more interactive work for the interns to do. I found myself bored more often than I would've liked

Advice

Take any opportunity to do something, even if it's not what you're familiar with or used to. You'll make so many connections and learn about things you didn't know you'd like.

Internal Communications Co-op

April - September 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

One of the best features of my position and employer was the level of responsibility given to me. My manager gave me a lot of autonomy in my role and trusted me with high-impact projects. I also liked the exposure that my role provided me with; through working in internal communications, I was able to collaborate with teams from so many different areas of the business. Another great feature of Comcast is its employees; my coworkers were very hardworking, intelligent, and helpful.

Enterprise Business Services Intern

May - August 2019 • Plymouth, MI

What I liked

I got to be a part of one of the most successful sales teams when it comes to the telecommunications business. The team i was on specialized in providing fiber optic network solutions to enterprises in Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky. As an intern I was able to see a wide array of things. I got to go to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a couple baseball games, and dinner on a yacht. All these events were designed to network with current and potential clients in order to build relationships. I also got to shadow a ton of different internal departments within Comcast Business. I shadowed every types of sales rep on the enterprise team. This included enterprise account executives, strategic enterprise account executives, as well as enterprise account managers. I also shadowed sales engineers, Metro Ethernet technicians, different sales managers, sales support reps, marketing development, and marketing analytics.

What I wish was different

I absolutely loved this internship. The only thing that I wish was different was that there was a little bit less down time. There were a few times where my team leader gave me a project to work on that was supposed to help occupy me while himself and some of the reps had to take care of something or would be gone for a day or two. However, I usually finished these projects fairly quickly due to skills I have learned in my classes here at Oakland University. Since I finished early most of the time, I often had to walk around and find work for myself and figure out where I could help out on. I like being able to go out and have the initiative to find work for myself, but sometimes nobody needed anything or the majority of the team was off site so there was not anything to do.

Advice

Talk to everyone you can and shadow as many different departments as you can. This internship was heavily sales focused even though my degree is more tech/analysis driven. Despite this difference, I was shown a new opportunity for me to pursue that I had never considered previously. Also, shadowing different departments could potentially open your eyes to something you absolutely want to do in the future.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I liked that my manager was hands-off. He allowed me to come into the office as I wished to, as long as I finished my assignments on time. Although it was intimidating, being given a spot at the table in a group of such experienced individuals made me more confident in my communicating and presenting skills.

What I wish was different

There was more downtime than I was anticipating. With my manager being hands-off, I often had to find work to do rather than have it be given to me. There were times when I was not sure if I was overstepping my bounds as an intern asking for work to do from certain individuals who weren't my manager. I wish there had been more structure and better alignment with the original job description.

Advice

I would say that as an intern, you should take advantage of the opportunities that are given to you--don't be shy, say hello, and ask to get coffee with people. You never know where a simple coffee chat can take you.

Sales and Marketing Events Intern

June - August 2019 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I enjoyed that the company had structured intern activities for all intern in Colorado. It was nice to network with other interns in different areas of the business and get to know more about their daily activities.

What I wish was different

I wish that my days would have been more structured. Most of my days outside formal intern events were up to interpretation by me on my projects and other internship goals. I wish I could have had a weekly plan for activities.

Advice

Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to talk to company leaders. They enjoy setting up meetings with interns and have a lot of knowledge to give. Make sure to utilize them in the beginning especially to get to know the company.

CORE Finance Intern (News Finance)

May - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

- The internship program was very structured, so we had a mentorship program, regular lunch and learns, a very comprehensive training session (to meet the other interns and also learn about the business), a case study project to work on with other interns, and overall, pretty good communication so I knew what to expect from the internship and what opportunities were available after the internship. - My manager was also great! He was a great mentor and I got the chance to work on meaningful projects across multiple teams. He also encouraged me to meet other colleagues in the News Finance group. - Work/life balance was also great! 40 hour workweek, so I had a lot of time to explore the city.

What I wish was different

Would've been cool to have a rotation program within this internship (but logistically that might be hard to manage because our internship time is so short).

Advice

Definitely reach out and ask your coworkers to grab coffee to hear about their work and career paths, as well as where they think the company is going in the future. I am more introverted so I was lucky my manager encouraged me to do this, but talking with other people has definitely been a rewarding part of my internship.
