Winter-Term Advocate Internship
*Middlebury College Students Only*
*Prospective interns should have completed WomenSafe’s Volunteer Training (giving them Crisis Worker Privilege) prior to the internship or may schedule time in the weeks/months before the internship begins to complete this training.
A. Duties & Responsibilities during initial week(s) of internship:
· Meet individually with other staff members to discuss their positions, duties and how they intersect with your position
· Research and write an article for our spring Newsletter
· Receive Osnium training about our statistical data collection system for recording all contacts with service users
· Assist with fundraising projects, Public Relations and bulk mailings as needed
· Participate in regular staff meetings at WomenSafe
- Ongoing Duties & Responsibilities (All duties & responsibilities stated above plus):
· Provide direct service to survivors of diverse backgrounds and status, who experienced stalking, sexual, dating and domestic violence by responding to crisis calls and in-person meetings
· Provide on-going crisis intervention, peer advocacy and on-going emotional support
· Provide information, options and safety planning
· Referral to and advocacy at community agencies
· Find safe emergency, transitional and permanent housing resources
· Criminal justice support and advocacy, which involves working with law enforcement, victim's advocates, Probation & Parole, domestic violence accountability program, etc. Advocate for survivors and keep them aware of the perpetrators’ status in these programs
· Court advocacy for Emergency and Final Relief from Abuse Orders and other court proceedings including divorce, parentage, child custody or district court proceedings
· Provide hospital, medical, social service and victim’s compensation information and advocacy
· Maintain statistics by following agency protocol for recording all contacts with service users
C. Participate in collective tasks as needed:
· Provide consistent and reliable shift coverage for 24-hour hotline
· Assist in planning and providing for public relations activities concerning volunteers, support groups, client services and community events
· Perform other related duties within the agency as requested by staff members or as decided in staff meetings
· Assist in the coordination of volunteer activities and trainings
Minimum Qualifications:
· A firm feminist understanding of gender justice issues, specifically those related to domestic and sexual violence
· A strength’s based approach to the work
· Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality policy
· Crisis intervention and peer support experience
· Ability to represent WomenSafe at community events and meetings with WomenSafe’s perspective and mission
· Willingness to take a proactive approach to learning experience at WomenSafe by seeking out staff for information, support or projects as needed
· Creative problem solver
· Non-judgmental attitude and ability to remain calm under pressure
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Strong organizational skills
· Flexibility and willingness to take on responsibility and new tasks
Desirable Qualifications:
· Social media outreach and education skills
· Bilingual in Spanish
· Knowledge and understanding of the legal system, computer literacy and administrative experience
· Demonstrated ability to advocate for women and children in multiple systems
· Experience working with people from diverse communities
· Knowledge of community resources
· Ability to work in a collaborative atmosphere
· Access to a reliable car
