This opportunity is part of Middlebury colleges Vermont Innovation Summer cohort program, sponsored by the innovation hub. This program support students working with companies across Burlington‘s innovative ecosystem. Vermont Innovation Summer internships will run from June 8 through July 31, 2026. This position comes with access to affordable, fee-based dormitory housing through Champlain College in Burlington. More information will be available in March upon the interns offer of employment, however, students will need to accept housing by April 1 in order to secure their spot. Eligibility: Interns must have at least a semester left at Middlebury following the conclusion of the internship to qualify. This position is not open to graduating seniors.
Burlington City Arts - Curatorial Intern
General Description and Learning Outcomes
Assist with curatorial and administrative tasks including research, administrative assistance, artist correspondence, exhibit project assistance, visitor services, and exhibit installation. Learning outcomes for the intern include: an introduction to a professional museum environment and career path; expose the intern to day-to-day art center operations working with a curatorial team; train the intern in basic curatorial support and art installation tasks; and serve as an educational and mentoring experience for the intern
Specific Projects: June 8 – July 31, 2026
- De-installation and exhibit support of Human Impact exhibition (closes June 20) and Installation of summer exhibitions (opens July 10)
- Exhibition research and writing bios, timelines, and other materials to support Summer & Fall 2026
- Assistance with development-outreach-implementation of select exhibition-based public programs e.g. artist talks, workshops, etc.
- Administrative curatorial duties as needed: draft correspondence
General Requirements & Application Process
- Student must be enrolled in an internship course with Middlebury College
- Able to commit 30 hours a week (during business hours) for a minimum of 3 days onsite
in accordance with a prearranged schedule (remainder hybrid).
- Strong written and oral skills, ability and/or some knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Able to work somewhat independently with a minimum of instruction
- Work a regular scheduled day in the curatorial office and one day onsite or offsite.
Responsibilities
- Create and organize exhibition folders, artist packets, general information
- Assist with packing and deinstallation of exhibitions; Participate in artist outreach programs
- Assist with correspondence and research as it relates to artists, upcoming exhibitions
- Assist with special exhibit or artist projects: brochures, artist development workshops, etc.
- Serve 1-2 gallery shifts per month in visitor services role engaging with community and school groups, or supporting tours.
- Assist in organizing and compiling information on regional / national artists for future shows.
- Completion of a daily intern log, personal bio, and description of internship to add to resume.
- One offsite artist studio visit with the curator with readings and other duties and projects as assigned.
