Medical and Operational Research Intern (Summer 2018)

Company

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization that provides medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries.

We welcome candidates who bring a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to join us in working toward MSF’s common mission.

Department

The Medical & Operational Research Department leads the development of medical and operational research initiatives and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. The Medical & Operational Research team supports the representation of MSF medical and operational priorities to U.S. public and private institutions.

Project

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is a novel diagnostic system of non-radiologist clinicians using highly portable ultrasounds and following simple pattern-recognition algorithms to answer specific questions at the patient’s bedside. Given the recent advances in ultrasound miniaturization, the continued falling costs and, most importantly, the simple algorithms being developed to train non-specialists, POCUS could be a powerful tool for MSF clinicians to care for patients. We recently successfully completed a proof-of-concept of training to our national staff in one hospital in Aweil, South Sudan.

MSF-USA was subsequently awarded an internal grant to expand POCUS usage in our projects. The objectives of this grant include:

  1. Implement medically accepted algorithms (e.g. trauma, obstetrics, soft tissue, etc.)
  2. Research novel ones (e.g. tuberculosis, shortness of breath)
  3. Create templates for integration in MSF fields considering: training methods, longitudinal learner tracking, HR implications, ultrasound technology, patient flow integration, etc

The implementation of this grant will happen in South Sudan, with involvement of multiple field sites.

The MedOps Research intern will work closely with the Project Coordinator, who may be in South Sudan for an extended period of time, to help implement this grant. The responsibilities will include assistance with all three of the above objectives.
