Pulmonary Function Technologist

The PFT Tech acts as a critical member of the patient care team within the department, collaborating fully with the other care team members in assuring continuity of care for their patients. The PFT Technologist promotes a philosophy of patient/family-focused care in all interactions.  This is a great opportunity for recent science grads with aspirations for a career in the medical field.

 

Description

Coach patients through various routine pulmonary tests:

                Spirometry

                Body Plethysmography

                DLCO

                Oximetry

                Bronchial Challenge Testing

                Sputum Inductions

                Six minute walk tests

Perform phlebotomy in the form of finger sticks, venipuncture and arterial punctures.

Run analysis of blood draws for hemoglobins and blood gasses.

Maintain and calibrate PFT equipment.

Assist in the technical training of new hires.

Maintain annual competencies for all testing and skills.

Report and participate in troubleshooting for any equipment/software maintenance or performance issues.

Stock testing areas with supplies.

Maintain a clean and safe environment for testing.

Follow all cleaning, disinfecting, and infection control policies.

Document testing in ComPAS and Epic systems.

Active participation in regular meetings and educational opportunities.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

BS or BA in Health, Life, or Physical Science.

Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with patients and families.

Must be able to work collaboratively with all team members, including in emergent situations.

Must possess strong analytic and organizational abilities.

Requires four to twelve weeks of progressive training at the beginning of employment (paid) to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to demonstrate competence in conducting tests independently.

Must be able to prioritize multiple responsibilities, and adapt to the changing pace within the department.

Must utilize excellent independent judgement, creativity and initiative when approaching a challenge.

Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Must be able to understand and operate (with training) required equipment and information systems.

Must be capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.)

Must adhere to all safety standards of the Hospital and regulatory entities.

Must have the ability to work with adult, elderly, and critically ill patients. Must have the ability to work productively in an emergency.

Maintains a high standard of maturity and professionalism at all times.
