Otter Creek Mapping Intern

Internship Title: Otter Creek Mapping Intern

Internship Site:   Montpelier (office) & Otter Creek watershed (field)

Description: This intern would assist with field data collection along the Otter Creek primarily by paddling nearly 100 miles from Mt. Tabor to Lake Champlain. Field data collection will consist of identifying both natural and manmade features along the creek as they relate to fishing, hunting, paddling, or historic resources. The intern would help identify the appropriate data to collect as well as develop data sheets for use in a future mapping project. Some of the opportunities afforded to the intern would be to work with a variety of staff working on everything from outdoor recreation to law enforcement.

NOTE: The ultimate goal of this project is to create an Otter Creek Fishing Trail that highlights all river features, public access, and any possible points of interest to anyone boating on the Otter Creek. Once all the field data is collected, I would like to explore turning this into a semester or thesis project (Middlebury’s GIS program?) so that we could actually create the fishing trail map.

Desired qualifications/skills/coursework: Experienced canoe/kayak paddler that is able to float a river on their own (if necessary), including navigating river obstacles and portaging a boat around natural and manmade dams. Trained in collecting field data using GPS units and taking detailed field notes. A working knowledge of GIS and map making for public consumption.

Supervision: Intern will be working within the Fishing Access Area Program, which is part of the Fisheries Division of the VT Fish & Wildlife Department. Direct supervisor will be Mike Wichrowski, Lands & Facilities Administrator, 1 National Life Drive, Montpelier.

Start and End Dates: June 1 to August 15, but dates are negotiable.

 Total Hours: 24 hours/week, 10 -12 weeks

Compensation:  $3,000.   If you are offered and accept this internship, please be aware that your funding for this position is provided by CCI, and therefore you will be required to complete funded internship paperwork.

How to apply: Upload your RESUME, COVER LETTER and AN ACADEMIC REFERENCE (PROFESSOR NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION) to Handshake by March 25, 2018 (11:55pm).
