Research Technician

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is looking for an exceptional candidate for a unique Research Associate position. This position affords the exciting opportunity to be part of a research effort at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute aiming to delineate genomic aberrations in cancer biology and discover novel therapeutic targets. He/she will use modern next generation sequencing techniques to characterize genomic aberrations and modern functional perturbation techniques including CRISPR/Cas9 and other genome editing tools. He/she will use various model systems to test for drug responses and determine mechanisms of resistance to drugs, including novel immunotherapies. He/she will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that evaluates new technologies and approaches to discover and validate novel systemic cancer biology.
The candidate is expected to work largely independently after training, but will be closely mentored by the principal investigator and others.

This position will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity. In general, this position will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.



Responsibilities

  • Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Clean, maintain and prepare supplies and work areas and may be responsible for ordering of supplies. Collaborates with Purchasing and may be responsible for negotiating with vendors.
  • Conduct standardized biological, microbiological or biochemical tests and laboratory analyses, including the collection of information and samples from organic substances, such as blood, drugs, and animals.
  • Isolate, identify and prepare specimens for examination.
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings, including grant preparation and presentations, and look for opportunities to co-author publications. May be expected to participate in formal and information presentations of results to staff.
  • Participate in grant application process and manuscript preparation as required.
  • Maintains detailed notebook of all work-related activities.
  • Monitors laboratory work to ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety information as well as the standard operation procedures specific to each laboratory.
  • Expected to provide intellectual and interactive commitment to position by keeping up with appropriate literature and research publications.
  • May be responsible for the development, modification and improvement of standard operating procedures.
  • Uses computers, computer-interfaced equipment, robotics or high-technology applications to perform work duties.
  • May be responsible for designing and executing advanced experiments and setting strategy.
  • May be responsible for the examination of animals and specimens to detect the presence of disease or other problems.
  • May be responsible for monitoring laboratory budgets.
  • Learn, execute and further develop next-generation sequencing protocols and explore novel techniques of low input genomics including single-cell sequencing.
  • Documents, compiles, and analyzes experimental protocols and data including running established computational pipelines on the command line.
  • Prepares, orders, and maintains stocks of necessary reagents, solutions and supplies.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment to complete investigations.
  • Works with mouse models to assess tumor formation, and drug response.
  • Learns and executes a variety of in vitro functional bioassays and high dimensional phenotypic readouts.
  • Uses wide assay of cell biology and molecular biology techniques to mechanistically characterize dependencies.
  • Handles cell culture of cancer cell lines and sensitive primary human cells. Uses established protocols and works closely with Broad and DFCI platforms, facilities, and collaborators.
  • Other related tasks as required.
  • Attends team meetings to share results, plan projects and experiments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required with a major in biology or chemistry preferred. 0-2 yrs of experience working in a scientific research setting a plus.
  • Knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, including the ability to handle a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment, large complex experiments, and large data sets, all of which demand great attention to detail.
  • Proactive in identifying problems and solutions to address them.
  • Must be an exceptional team player.
  • Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity of basic cell culture and molecular biology laboratory techniques, including recombinant DNA and protein biochemistry, strongly desired.
  • Familiarity with fluorescent microscopy or flow cytometry is desirable.
  • Familiarity with the command line, linux systems and R is desirable.
