The Endowed Surgical Scholar Program at Northwell Health is a unique program designed to provide a comprehensive clinical experience for gap year students with a strong interest in a career in academic medicine. We are seeking a gap year student for Northwell Health's Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to begin in July 2020. This is a great opportunity for anyone taking the year to apply to medical school to gain clinical experience, letters of recommendation, and connections with internationally-renowned surgeons from the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Surgical Scholars choose this program because of their interest in clinical exposure, patient education, quality improvement, innovation, information technology, and/or continuing medical education. This one-year program immerses the Surgical Scholar to many aspects of clinical surgery through a variety of activities including:
·        Outpatient ambulatory care observation
·        Clinical research
·        Surgery observation
·        IRB, CME, and grant applications
·        Patient education materials
·        Innovation projects

Responsibilities include projects related to patient education and patient outreach, as well as administrative duties such as maintaining a patient database. There are opportunities to work on clinical research projects and publications with faculty members. As a member of a small office, this position involves direct interaction with the patients, doctors and clinical staff. There will also be opportunities to attend grand rounds, presentations, and conferences with plastic and reconstructive surgery residents, faculty members, and medical students.

Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills and a positive attitude are crucial!

This is a one-year, paid, full-time position intended for a current senior who will be applying to medical school immediately following graduation. Applicant must have completed taking the MCAT by the time the Program begins in the Summer of 2020. If already taken, please include this score on your resume, cover letter, or unofficial transcript. Time off will be granted regularly to attend medical school interviews throughout the year.
