Summer Internship: Conservation Sustainability

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is currently accepting applications for an internship within the Conservation Department (1 position available).

This internship program is designed to provide learning opportunities and practical experience, while gaining valuable knowledge relating to a career in wildlife conservation. The Conservation Intern will assist the Conservation Action Coordinator with the preparation and facilitation of on-site sustainability programs and guest and community outreach both on and off grounds. Our internship offers a hands-on opportunity to work in a conservation program in a zoological setting. We require a commitment of 12-14 weeks. This is not a Mon-Fri 9-5, some weekend and evening work will be required. This is an unpaid position and no housing is provided.

REPORTS TO: Conservation Action Coordinator

DATES: Summer 2020: May 26th – August 15th (12 weeks)

This conservation internship opportunity focuses on waste management, understanding of utility usage, and education on an organization wide scale. The main duties of the candidate will be to assist in tracking waste streams and resource usage at the zoo as well as involvement in local conservation action.

Intern duties may include the following:

·        Helping increase guest awareness of local conservation work the Zoo is undertaking

·        Assisting in on and off site Zoo events such as World Oceans Day, Wild Aware Utah Day, Zoo Brews, and Jordan River events

·        Education of staff and guests to improve the Zoo’s recycling program

·        Participation in the Zoo’s Green Team

·        Involvement in the 2020 Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation conference being hosted by Utah’s Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary

·        Waste audits of events held at the Zoo, food areas, and animal care areas

·        Helping identify areas of Zoo operations that can be improves so as to more closely align with AZA sustainability guidelines

·        Assisting in at least one wildlife surveying field day/outing

·        Opportunities to shadow zoo keepers

·        Keeping an up to date weekly journal

·        Completion of an intern project with a presentation to Zoo staff at the end of the internship

QUALIFICATIONS: Be currently enrolled in/ or have recently graduated from a college or university. Have a minimum of one year of course work in a major field of study to be applied during the internship (e.g. environmental science). Demonstrated enthusiasm for and interest in working in the conservation field. As the position will involve waste audits the applicant must be comfortable handling waste (food, plastic, paper, wrappers, etc.) and getting dirty in general. Applicants should be able to stand for at least 3 hours, be able to lift 30 lbs., and be comfortable in outdoor environments such as along the Jordan River and mountain habitats that require hiking. Interns need to have a recent negative TB test, and tetanus shot. A basic knowledge and understanding of computer word processing, excel, GIS, and PowerPoint is helpful.

WORK SCHEDULE: 16-40 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Interns may be scheduled to work on holidays and weekends.

COMPENSATION: The Conservation Internship is unpaid. Possible college credit is available for those able to receive it through their college/university. No housing provided.
