Position: Clinical Research Assistant
The Division of Ophthalmology of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides the highest level of eye care and serves as an important referral center for New England. The Longwood Medical Eye Center of the BIDMC Division of Ophthalmology is accepting applicants for a two-year academic clinical research assistant position under the supervision of Dr. Jorge Arroyo, MD, MPH. Dr. Arroyo is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Retina Service at the BIDMC. His research interests include evaluating surgical outcomes following vitreoretinal surgery, developing novel procedures such as endoscopy-assisted surgical techniques and pneumatic vitreolysis, and improving our understanding of retinal pathology in conditions such as retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions.
The clinical and research responsibilities for this two-year, full-time paid position are as follows:
A.) Clinical duties include: Assisting in the clinical care of ~100 patients per week, performing preliminary eye exams and tests, fundus photography and optical coherence tomography imaging, preparing patients for procedures such as intravitreal injections and laser treatments, surgical video recording, coordinating patient flow and follow-up care, and developing and maintaining relationships with patients, families, staff and faculty.
B.) Research opportunities include: Spearheading independent research projects under the guidance of Dr. Arroyo and research collaborators, managing and maintaining IRB-approved research protocols, serving as the adviser to multiple Masters’ thesis students, coordinating clinical trials, collecting and analyzing patient data, and preparing manuscripts and abstracts for research conferences and publication.
The research assistant is expected to be the lead author on peer-reviewed articles and present their research at ophthalmology conferences and meetings such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Previous assistants have gone on to medical school and/or graduate school, pursuing MD and MD/PhD degrees.
We are seeking outstanding individuals who:
1) Hold a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
2) Have a strong background in statistical analysis and scientific writing.
