Summer Counselor Intern (unpaid)

The Child Study Center is looking to recruit recreational and educational counselor interns for the Summer Program for Kids (SPK), an all-day, evidence-based, therapeutic program, devoted exclusively to 6-9 ½ year old children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is an unpaid internship for professional development and/or NYU school credit. Interns will be under the direct supervision of a trained professional.

The SPK is located at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY and is directed by Dr. Karen Fleiss, a nationally renowned clinical psychologist and expert in the treatment of children with AD/HD. In addition, ongoing consultation is provided by Child Study Center clinicians with expertise in the treatment of ADHD and related behavior disorders. The SPK provides intensive weekday treatment tailored to children’s behavioral and educational needs. During the program, children are placed in age-similar groups of up to 15 children, and are supervised by six counselors (and one lead counselor per group). In order to improve classroom behavior, three hours a day are devoted to classroom intervention. During this time, children are supervised by Classroom Leaders in a structured setting.  Children spend the remainder of the day in recreational activities during which time the counselors implement a comprehensive behavior modification system. Treatment components include a point system, response cost, time out, group problem-solving, social skills training, sports skills training, as well as other strategies.

  • Students (NYU and non-NYU) can elect to participate in the SPK as a counselor intern for professional development. OR
  • Students (NYU and *non-NYU) can participate as an NYU student and take the position as a 3-credit course (Tuition: Approx $1,450 per credit).
  •  (*If you are not an NYU student, and are interested in taking the course, please inquire at your university to determine if credits earned can be transferred.)

The position provides junior and senior level undergraduate, and graduate level students with a valuable opportunity to receive training and gain experience with children in a clinical setting.

  • Excellent opportunity for graduate school and work recommendations
  • Gain clinical experience with children with ADHD and behavioral concerns
  • Learn and use behavioral treatment strategies
  • Receive daily supervision by clinical psychologists
  • Counselors are required to complete approximately 3 weeks of training with our clinical staff before the start of the program. Training will begin on June 8th and will be held at our New York, NY office. Summer Counselor Interns work Monday through Friday, typically from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. In addition, Summer Lead Counselor Interns participate in parent training activities one evening a week between 5:15 pm and 7:15 pm. The summer program will begin on June 29 and will run through to July 31, 2020
