Research Assistant I Lab
The Macklis Lab is directed toward (1) understanding molecular controls and mechanisms over neuron sub-type development, diversity, axon guidance-circuit formation, and degeneration in the cerebral cortex and (2) applying developmental controls toward both brain and spinal cord regeneration and directed differentiation for in vitro therapeutic and mechanistic screening.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and senior lab personnel, the research assistant will support research activities in one or more of the following areas:
- molecular biology, including cloning and CRISPR gene editing;
- mouse genetics, husbandry, behavior, neuroanatomy, and surgery;
- cell culture, including directed differentiation of stem cells into neurons and brain organoids;
- microscopy, tissue processing, CLARITY, and image analysis.
Working within specific guidelines and under specific direction from supervisors and other research staff, Research Assistant will:
- Perform laboratory experiments using developed approaches. Assist in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, protocols, and new approaches;
- In coordination with senior lab personnel, maintain and genotype mouse lines and/or mammalian cell cultures;
- Analyze experimental data, and troubleshoot experimental protocols to ensure successful and timely project completion;
- Document, compile, and assist with interpreting experimental data. Report data to supervisor and team;
- Process, organize, and summarize data using scientific, word processing, statistical software applications, and the Adobe creative package;
- Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs;
- Instruct and assist other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques including standard molecular biology techniques, cell culture techniques, microscopy, and/or animal care;
- Perform related lab duties such as maintaining and cleaning equipment, preparing common stock solutions, maintaining the animal colony, assisting in the acquisition of animals, and ordering supplies.
Basic Qualifications
College level coursework in -biological sciences and at least one year of lab experience with molecular biology, cell culture, surgical techniques, laboratory animals, and/or microscopy.

- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
- High level of initiative and motivation; ability to work independently and with a team.
- Attention to detail, especially in regard to executing experimental protocols.
- Ability to think creatively to solve problems.
- Experience in one or more of the following is preferred: brain development, gene editing technology, animal handling, surgical techniques, stem cell culture, and microscopy techniques.

This is a grant-funded two-year term position with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and the continued availability of funding.
