Empathetics, Inc. Fellow

This postgraduate fellowship opportunity has been referred to us by Middlebury trustee Helen Riess P'13, '15. Dr. Riess is cofounder and chief scientific officer of Empathetics Inc., a company that provides web-based and blended empathy-training solutions and related relational-skills solutions for health care and other industries. In addition, Dr. Riess is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the empathy and relational science program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She teaches about therapeutic relationships and conducts translational research on the neuroscience of empathy and emotions.

Empathetics, Inc., was founded in 2012 to provide innovative empathy and interpersonal skills training through an advanced e-learning platform, live training workshops and consulting services for medical professionals, law enforcements officers, business professional, financial advisors and veterinarians. Empathetics leverages new, scientifically proven methods that enhance human relationships, increase patient and customer satisfaction, and make professional practices more effective and efficient, and enjoyable.

While the fellowship is unpaid, it is ideally suited to a new graduate planning further study in the health professions, social impact, communications, business, or other fields. The Empathetics Fellowship is a truly interdisciplinary opportunity for someone interested in psychology, health and wellness, communications, marketing, and technology within a social enterprise startup.

The Opportunity: The Fellow will have an opportunity to take Empathetics courses, learn to speak knowledgeably about the science of empathy, and engage healthcare, malpractice insurance companies, police departments, and business stakeholders in conversations about the importance of empathy in various industries and society writ large.

Reporting directly to Dr. Helen Riess and our business development consultant, the Fellow will have an opportunity to interview thought leaders for our newsletter, contribute to marketing and business development, respond to client inquiries, and schedule appointments and presentations.

The Commitment: This role begins mid to late January until August 2021, offers 20 hours per week, a flexible schedule, and requires daily engagement with the team. There may be a possibility for full-time employment at the conclusion of the Fellowship
