CTEC Extremism Investigation Winter Term Intern 2023

The Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Washington, DC is seeking qualified Middlebury College students for an internship for Winter Term 2023. This will be an in-person experience in DC. Students will assist CTEC’s Senior Research Scholar and Research Leads with a wide array of extremism- and terrorism-related projects, with a particular focus on accelerationism and online extremism.
Specifically, CTEC is looking for students to work on short- and long-form reports, literature reviews, and open-source research. Possible example projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing a foundation of knowledge on region-specific neofascism and accelerationism;
  • Learning how to identify emerging extremism trends on digital platforms;
  • Contributing to CTEC’s ongoing written reports, such as the Dangerous Organizations and Bad Actors series. 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong research skills and an understanding of research methodology;
  • Demonstrated interest in terrorism, extremism, or security-related issues; 
  • Strong written and verbal communication. 

This opportunity is funded with a $2000 CCI internship award to support expenses associated with the internship, including travel and accommodations. Housing is not provided, but housing search support will be made available. Please note this is a competitive application process, with funding available for five students.
