Winter Term 2024 - Biblioteca David Kitson (Costa Rica) Teacher Assistant/Intern

The Biblioteca David Kitson in Nosara is a foundation that, during Costa Rica's summer break, serves as a place where children and adults receive ESL, ESOL instructions. Middlebury students have taken part in this program during Winter Term (4 weeks in January) since 1998.

Our interns will be teaching Monday - Thursday including a group of school aged kids during the day and adult classes at night. During the first week of arriving to Nosara, interns will be given an intensive training where they will learn the methodology, classroom management strategies, as well as tips and tricks to teach kids and adults. Our English program takes place all year long so our local kids and adults are already familiar with the program. Students are grouped based on age or ability and generally include about 10 students per class. Both adult and kids classes range anywhere from students with zero English to advanced English. Our kids classes will have our interns teaching an English lesson, engaging in games/activities, and of course building relationships. Adult classes will include a specific topic to teach followed by activities and conversational activities for students to practice together.

Our English classes are expected to be taught 100% in English, however it is very helpful to understand Spanish in order to understand questions that may be asked to you, as well as enjoy the culture of Costa Rica during your free time. For this reason, it is preferred to have completion of Spanish 220 or higher. Preference is also given to those with experience working with kids or adults.

Interns will need to arrive January 1st, 2024. The last day of classes will be February 1st.
