Chemonics International

Global Operations Intern

June - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

My team was very welcoming and helpful. They really cared about my summer experience and invested in me learning new things by helping me create a professional development plan and giving me my own project to complete from start to finish.

What I wish was different

It was hard to find community because it was a hybrid experience. Even though there were about 25 interns there weren't many intern events and the office was massive but everyone worked on different floors so it was somewhat isolating.

Advice

This is definitely a good company if you are very passionate about international development and mission. If you are looking for a more project focused international development experience, you should not work in the corporate office, even the project managers do mostly administrative and logistics work for their project.

Continuous Improvement Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

My internship at Chemonics has been anything but ordinary. I have met so many amazing people that have shown me that development work is for everyone and anyone. Interns are constantly challenged to grow both personally and professionally, by developing knowledge and gaining tools that help us become well-rounded professionals. From my experience, I can say that the culture at Chemonics is supportive and collaborative. Everyone I have met truly reflects the guiding principles and values of the company, supporting one another by recognizing that we are all working towards the same goals. As an intern, being able to be a part of this culture has been so empowering.

USAID Project Intern

June - August 2019 • Tunis, Tunisia

What I liked

It was a great experience learning to work on the job while in a completely new environment and culture. Being able to travel and work was amazing and interacting with different people helped me learn a lot.

What I wish was different

Being in a new environment always has it's struggles, one thing I wish was different is I wish I had some friends or at least a couple VCU students to experience it together. Being alone in a new environment was difficult at times but very glad to have done it because not many people can say that.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is always be open to new experiences in different places than you have never been too because it could be the best times of your whole life, especially being able to add that to a resume.

Water, Energy, and Sustainable Cities Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved the work environment, my coworkers and immediate team, the opportunities for professional development. I was able to wear many hats and take on a considerable degree of responsibility. The internship program is relatively new and very well-designed. There were numerous opportunities to engage with senior leadership and industry experts.

What I wish was different

Nothing, was a very valuable experience, however I wish there were full time return offers granted at the end of the internship.

Advice

Ask questions, get to know the backgrounds and career paths of your coworkers, attend as many professional development events as possible.

Advice

Take advantage of the constant training opportunities and events within the company. They are a great resource not only in terms of building skills and qualifications, but also building personal connections and being exposed to areas that are very interesting but not exactly related to your usual responsibilities.
