GEICO

Business Leadership Intern

June - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

Real-world business experience. Tons of exposure to upper-management. Assigned a peer mentor and a manager mentor to help you throughout the whole process. Offer you the chance to interview for a full-time position at the end of the interview. Friday's were spent out of office doing community service. Also paid really well. Great company culture and a great place to intern!

Intern

June - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

There was a lot of time spent to developing us as professionals. Tons of feedback from supervisors and peers. Opportunity to work on real business problems.

What I wish was different

If you finished your project, you had absolutely nothing to do. Very hierarchical and bureaucratic.

Advice

To make the most out of it, 1) form a relationship with your supervisor 2) seek out additional mentors and projects.

Business Leadership Intern

June - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

The group of people I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish that it started earlier in May! I also wish that I was ore interested in the industry because it seems as though it offers competitive pay to its employees.

Advice

I would be sure to be as prepared as possible for phone and in-person interviews. There is many steps to the interview process and you must be prepared, and also be yourself. The company appreciates authenticity.

Business Leadership Summer Intern

May - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This internship was a lot of fun! We were able to present to the senior leadership team multiple times and really get to know the leaders within the office. Everyone in the office was extremely kind and willing to help us in every project that we we challenged with.

What I wish was different

We had a very large group this summer which caused for a lot of conflict. Moving forward smaller groups would work better.

Advice

Go in ready to do presentations and learn about the business. GEICO offers a lot of knowledge about the insurance industry and GEICO as a whole. The GEICO office was both welcoming and a fun environment to want to work in moving forward.

IT Intern

June - August 2019 • Chevy Chase, MD

What I liked

The work environment was great! Everyone was super helpful, they all loved working for GEICO, and the internship was very well organized.

What I wish was different

Being randomly assigned a team could be hit or miss, which would detract from the experience. I got lucky and loved my team, but some interns wished they were on a different team.

Advice

Ask questions about anything and everything. I learned way more about the company and systems they had because I just asked other people I met about their projects. If you only focus on your project and don't try to meet people, you will not get as much out of it as you could have.

GEICO Internship

June - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

Working with students my age but from all different backgrounds. We all were similar in age and were rising seniors, so we were very likeminded however we all strived for that leadership position. It helped my grow professionally while still building my leadership and other skills. During this 9 week internship, we were given 3-4 projects, some larger than others but all required working in new teams and presenting to all department heads, VP, and even the CEO at one point.

What I wish was different

Honestly, there is not one thing I would change. I wish it was longer!

Advice

If you want to be pushed and strive to be the best version of yourself than this is the internship for you! There are times where you are completely stressed out however, you learn new skills, get real world work experience and get to expand your network with amazing people.

Business leadership intern

June - August 2019 • Woodbury, NY

What I liked

It was a very welcoming and inviting experience. A good introduction to an office lifestyle with a good company culture.

What I wish was different

The internship class was very large, it was easy to feel overwhelmed in large group settings and the experience wasn’t as individualized as I would have wanted.

Advice

Having an internship gave me a piece of real world experience to have a better understanding before graduation. I would advocate for everyone to get as much work experience to build relationships and find out what you like and dislike in a job and workplace before graduating.

Business Leadership Intern

June - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate in teams to solve real-world business problems. I learned a lot about process implementation of solutions, as well as more about my own leadership style. It was also a great opportunity to refine my presentation skills. I was able to establish team and mentor relationships that I have maintained to this day!

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer than 8 weeks. It would have been great to do another project or two.

Advice

Always be open to learning and be sure to demonstrate leadership maturity by taking initiative to go above and beyond. Setting goals for yourself at the beginning of the internship is really rewarding as well. It is amazing to see the progress you make as a leader in just 8 weeks!

Business leadership summer internship

June - August 2019 • Renton, WA

What I liked

It was a great experience that helped me make new business connections. The job was fun and not stressful, and I received an offer that I accepted

What I wish was different

Nothing, the people were great and it was a great experience

Advice

I would say that the biggest thing to do now a days is learn how to communicate with people. Everyone is now becoming more introverted with the new advancements to technology so people skills are a top priority for most jobs.

UI Designer Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved the design team there. It is really small and everyone knows each other pretty well. What you do in your internship really matters and it was super fulfilling.

What I wish was different

I wish it had maybe gone on for a month more. 10 weeks felt kinda short. Also, my friend’s offer after the internship wasn’t great and seemed like a low salary for working in DC :/ also If you are not working in design, it may be a bit of a crap shoot

Advice

Take on as much work as you think you can handle, but don’t say yes to everything or you will be overworked. If you don’t have enough to do, ask for more!!

Business Leadership Intern

June - July 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

GEICO is very focused on increasing growth opportunities for associates. The four projects we completed as interns incorporated that growth mindset and exposed us to all areas of the auto-insurance business. We learned about the day-to-day operations from an associate, supervisor, and manager perspective as well as having sessions with corporate executives (including an in-person session with the CEO) that helped develop our understanding of GEICO's business strategy.

What I wish was different

The potential downsides of this internship are that the pay is less competitive than other corporations of this size and the internship is shorter (it lasted for a little under two months). I would have appreciated a higher hourly wage and the opportunity to spend more time doing the internship. Bear this in mind but do not let this hold you back from pursuing the internship!

Advice

GEICO is very encouraging about their open door policy and gives you the chance to build a professional network with some amazing individuals. Do not hold back in scheduling meetings and creating opportunities to talk with company personnel. They really value their interns!
