The collaboration between researchers, graduate students, PI’s, etc. was surprising to me and I really enjoyed it. I have always been a team player whether it comes to sports or professional work and I thought the experience was a great blend of independent work and cooperation.

What I liked
The culture at Mount Sinai is wonderful! Everyone here is super warm and welcoming and want to see you grow. There are many different roles that make up the Talent Acquisition/Retention department here and throughout my time, I was able to be exposed to so many different roles (recruiting, sourcing, onboarding, credentialing, etc.) Everyone here is super passionate about what they do and being immersed in that type of environment definitely motivates me to work just as hard.
What I wish was different

This internship gives you a lot of autonomy. It's great because you have the freedom to work at your own pace and develop a workflow that suits your style. At times however, you can feel like your lacking direction if there's not much to do. I definitely would recommend taking the initiative and seeing if people need help to fill in those gaps.

Advice
If you have the opportunity as a nursing student to get a summer nurse externship do not pass it up. It has helped me learn so many things that cannot be talk but sitting in a classroom. It is an experience I’ll never forget.

I wished I would have done my own presentation of the research instead of the coordinators putting all of our data together.
Advice
One piece of advice is to keep an open mind. The job might been tedious at first, but it's making a huge impact on the community.

Beautiful facility. Great hands-on work in office administration and patient care. Great for psychology or general pre-med students. Great networking and understanding the daily work done in a hospital.

It is a large time commitment, would like to be paid but I understand it is volunteer work.
Advice
Always ask questions. They can range from medical and scientific curiosity to future career paths. Everyone is open and ready to help you but you need to show interest.

I learned how to sort data in Matlab and the precautions necessary for working in a primate lab. The people I worked with were very kind and helpful.
What I wish was different
I wish I had made money and had gotten the chance to actually work with the monkeys, which takes much more training than I had. Also I wish I had worked in an environment with more collaboration rather than individual work.
Advice
If you want to work with monkeys in a primate lab and not just do data analysis, make sure that you make time for that training early on!

What I liked
I liked that I got to have a lot of independence on the job. Once my boss showed me how to do a procedure once or twice, I could do everything on my own after. Since I'd be working on my own project, I can come and go when I want and leave for lunch whenever. I have to wait on a lot of steps to finish so I could use that time to do other things like study for the MCAT
What I wish was different
I wish the learning process had been faster in some ways. In the beginning I was trying various projects to see which one I wanted to get involved in which meant that the researcher kept having to walk me through all the steps. Once I chose my project, I was able to work on my own which I enjoyed.
Advice
Always take notes and don't be afraid to ask questions. It shows you are paying attention plus you will end up better off when you do your own work.

What I liked
Great nursing staff and educator! The different units that each of the students were chosen to work on were all amazing. All the nurses and managers on the units were very receptive to having an intern. I learned a great deal about the unit I was on to better prepare myself.
What I wish was different
I wish the HR process was a bit more organized, as the entire interview set up was not ideal and confusing.
Advice
Ask lots of questions and don't be afraid to make yourself known on the unit.
