Getting out into the community of a devastated one by a fire was heartbreaking but it was the most rewarding work I have ever done in my life. Watching that community rebuild was a life changing experience and I will never forget summer ‘19.

Democracy and Governance Intern

July - October 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

The program was very inclusive and it felt like I was making important contributions to projects. It is a very fulfilling experience to have worked on projects with a real-world impact. Everyone was welcoming and helpful and treated me as a member of the team. There is also a thorough orientation process at the start of the internship which exposes you to all the departments and eases you into the position. The work schedule was pretty flexible as well and I was able to work from home.

What I wish was different

Occasionally, I'd have times where I had no work to do. In that case, I could not log any hours.

Advice

I'd recommend to meet with everyone whose work is interesting to you. I was able to meet with a bunch of associates who offered me insight in their backgrounds, experience, and the work they do. All the associates I spoke to was very open and welcoming to chat.

Advice

When lining up a job for post graduation try not to get too frustrated if you don't see immediate results from applying to jobs. Keep applying and use all of your resources to look for available job opportunities . This includes using everyone in your network. Contact old bosses, friends of the family, professors, even your parents- whoever, because you never know who might have your next opportunity. I got my job by contacting an old boss. He didn't have any open positions, but it happened that his wife worked in my industry and he was able to connect me to her company. Contact everyone you can think of, it's always worth a shot!
